Travel Industry Has Key Role to Play in Achieving Paris Goals
The world’s largest software provider for the travel industry has committed to become climate neutral by signing the Climate Neutral Now pledge, an initiative of UN Climate Change.
The travel and tourism sectors have a huge role to play in the fight against climate change. Raising awareness amongst millions of travelers, implementing technological solutions that improve environmental performance and using carbon offset options are some ways through which the industry can help achieve the targets of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
Under the Paris Climate Change Agreement, the nations of the world have agreed to limit the global average temperature to as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius, thereby limiting the worst impacts of climate change which include severe droughts, floods and storms.
Amadeus IT Group aims to become climate neutral by the second half of the 21st Century through the following measures:
- Measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions:
Amadeus Environmental Management System measures the company’s environmental impact and identifies best practices to share among all company’s sites across the world
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible:
Energy efficiency measures are particularly relevant for the processing of travel related transactions. Amadeus has an energy efficiency policy in place to improve energy and emissions performance as much as possible.
- Offsetting remaining emissions with UN Certified Emission Reductions.
Being climate neutral benefits not only the environment. In many cases carbon-offset projects contribute to modernization of infrastructure in developing countries, boosting economic development and job creation.
“We are fully committed to working with travel industry players like Amadeus to fight climate change in accordance with the Paris Agreement. This global accord lays the groundwork for a low-carbon future and is key to confronting the serious risk that climate change poses to present and future generations,” said Niclas Svenningsen, who leads the Climate Neutral Now initiative of UN Climate Change.
Tomas López Fernebrand, SVP General Counsel and Corporate Secretary from Amadeus, said: “We acknowledge environmental sustainability is a key issue for the long term success of our industry and we need to address it accordingly. Entering into the UN Climate Neutral Pledge is a commitment in this direction. We need also to work together with other industry players to achieve overall carbon neutrality”.
